6 cases of legionnaires disease have been confirmed in Kent.

1 person has died and the Health Protection Agency or on the hunt for the source before more infections occur.

Legionella infection is caused by breathing in aerosol water droplets which contain the bacteria. It can be present in any water system if the conditions are right for its growth and multiplication.

There is ligislation to cover legionella control but unfortunately the awareness around the real dangers of legionella and the fact that it can be fatal is still minimal. Many public buildings and employers fail to adequately manage or control the risks of legionella.

We would not be surprised if it is found that a legionella risk assessment has not been conducted to cover the water sources that are eventually found to be the source of infection.

There is a legal obligation to carryout a legionella risk assessment of water systems in the work place however so many business owners are unaware of this obligation. As a result we continue to get speradic outbreaks across the UK which ultimately end up being fatal.

Without proper awareness these outbreaks will continue to take lives on an annual basis.
